Dylan K Richards, PhD

Dylan K Richards, PhD is a Research Assistant Professor at the Center on Alcohol, Substance use, And Addictions (CASAA) at the University of New Mexico. He is currently supported by an early career development award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA; K01AA030789). His primary research interest is in how and why people improve their relationship with alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs. To date, most of his work has focused on applying self-determination theory to understand what motivates people to drink alcohol responsibly, such as using a designated driver, setting a drink limit, or not mixing different types of alcohol.

Dylan completed a postdoctoral fellowship at CASAA in 2023 that was supported by a Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Individual National Research Service Award from NIAAA (F32AA028712). He received a PhD in Health Psychology in 2020 from the University of Texas at El Paso, an MA in Experimental Psychology in 2018 from the University of Texas at El Paso, and a BS in Psychology in 2014 from George Mason University.
